5 Ways You Can Successfully Complete Your New Year’s Resolutions

Welcome to 2021! With the holiday festivities now in the background, it’s time to embark on making your annual list of resolutions and goals for the next 365 days.

But unlike other years where your goals may not necessarily amount to anything, this year, we at SocietyA are determined to help you achieve everything that you’ve set out to accomplish.

The trick to finding New Year’s resolutions that stick? Find small, achievable tasks that help you pave the way to realizing that goal. “It’s not the extent of the change that matters,” advises psychologist Dr. Lynn Bufka. “Rather the act of recognizing that lifestyle change is important and working toward it, one step at a time.”

With that in mind, we’ve found five common New Year’s resolution ideas, and easy ways that you can meet them.

#1 – Buy better

If one of your goals for 2021 is to buy more responsibly, you’re not alone. Fashion search data community Lyst reported that searches for “vegan leather”, “recycled plastic” and “organic cotton” all saw increased attention last year.

At SocietyA, one brand that we love is PH5 and their line of stylish, statement-making knitwear. Unlike woven clothing, knitwear can be unraveled and have the fibres recycled again, ensuring there is no wastage in the production process. Plus, their signature wavy asymmetric dress from their Resort 21 collection makes for a versatile and chic dress for all occasions!

South Korean brand Tibaeg also uses eco-leather, ensuring that no animals were harmed in creating these pleated perfections! Pick from a sweet, feminine bubblegum pink or a joy-inducing sky blue.

Finally, we adore Sans Faff, and we’ve got two reasons. Firstly, the line consists of classic, evergreen staples such as figure-skimming maxi dresses and comfy, everyday tees that will last you a long time. Secondly, Sans Faff manufactures everything locally to keep carbon footprints low, and they produce limited quantities of every item so as to cut down on textile and production waste.

#2 – Spend more time with those who matter

In our day-to-day grind, it’s so easy to lose focus of the people who matter in our lives. So in 2021, make it a goal to spend more time with your loved ones. Have a few of them over one weekend a month so that you can catch up on the news and stories that you might have missed.

The Fix: For a quick afternoon tea set-up, why not brew a few pots of tea using the Luxury Gift Set from The Tea Story? You can ask your friends to pick from any of the four flavours, and you can even break out a couple chocolate bars from Mr. Bucket to go along with your tea.

And when you’re spending time with kids, rather than giving them a screen to stare at all day, take them out for some parent-child bonding. Hit up a museum, visit the beach, or swing in for some mother-daughter retail therapy by perusing the matching fashionable items by local designer Maison Q. Whether it’s a refreshing mint-coloured dress for mother and daughter, or smartly tailored blue shirts for dad and son, there are so many options to pick from to make this a truly fun experience.

#3 – Prioritise sleep

With all that we have going on in our lives, it’s easy to forget how important good sleep is. To help lull you to bed quicker, try meditating before bed. “The idea is to create a reflex to more easily bring forth a sense of relaxation,” says Dr. Herbert Benson, director emeritus of the Harvard-affiliated Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine.

The Fix: As you begin to make this a habit, start off each meditation by filling your room with a beautiful scent. With Nena’s Handmade Burner with Immunity Oil, light the concrete handmade burner and drop in a few drops of the immunity essential oil to help your mind wind down before bed.

#4 – Hit the gym more often

Are you feeling guilty from trying to work out more, but not meeting your target? Don’t worry, we are also guilty of always resolving to do this, but never actually going through with it! According to personal trainer Rob Sulaver, one way you can fix this is to go for classes with your friends, or work with a trainer. “It’s easy to cancel on yourself, but it’s not as easy to back out on someone who’s waiting for you in the weight room,” he adds.

The Fix: After a good workout sesh, you deserve a nice comforting bath as well. Make sure you pack a good cleanser – we are digging Aromatica’s Reviving Rose Infusion Cream Cleanser, which is a cruelty-free, vegan and non-drying cleanser that will leave your skin feeling cleansed and soft. It’s going to give you something to look forward to when you’re busting calories on the treadmill!

Otherwise, another great bet is Re:erth’s Festive Mini Starter Kit, which comes complete with a Clarifying Cleanser, Multi-Targeted Elixir, Calming Toner and Hydrating Gel Moisturiser. Throw this into your gym bag, and you’ve got a complete post-shower skincare regime ready to go.

#5 – Work towards that promotion

If you’re looking to climb the next rung of your career ladder, don’t count on luck or chance to get you there. Make solid steps such as formulating a plan for growing your career, and then checking that with your manager to ensure both of you are on the same page.

The Fix: The age-old saying tells you to dress for the job you want. “Ultimately, remember that what you wear impacts what people think about you,” advises Susan Chritton, a career coach.

For that, look to D.Tale’s Vector Vest to help solve your workwear woes. Its tailored-meets-draped fit strikes the right balance between business formal and casual, and the neutral black and grey is perfectly suited for every office space. Dress it up with tailored pants, or go for a feminine skirt to round off your look.
